Oslo The history of Oslo is more than a thousand years old. The city of Oslo, which became the capital of Norway in 1299, is situated in a beautiful location at the end of the Oslo Fjord, where the hills and woods meet the sea. By sea you can visit the Viking ships and the exhibition of the Kon-Tiki raft which brought the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl from South America to the Easter Island. The Polar ships Fram and Gjøa, and the Maritime museum are also nearby. The masterpieces of our most famous painter Edward Munch can be seen in the National Gallery close to the conference venue and in the Munch Museum. Up in the hills, the view is magnificent and for visitors, the Holmenkollen area is a must, with its famous ski jump and World Cup arena for Nordic skiing. Oslo is a busy harbour city with daily ferries to Denmark and Germany, train and bus connections to Sweden and Denmark and connection by air to the rest of Europe. The University of Oslo is Norway's largest and oldest institution of higher education. It was founded in 1811 when Norway still was a Danish dependency.
